Notes from Committee Meeting 29th March 2011
Present
Keith Robbins (acting Chairman), Gaye Kyle, Lyn Morton, Marilyn Newbould, Alan Parker, Loraine Jones, Pete Owen-Smith, Arthur Jones (Secretary)
Introduction
The committee had been unable to find a convenient date for a meeting, and held brief discussions prior to an “introduction to duplicate bridge” evening. This notes the contents of those discussions.
Keith noted that Alan Grunwald has had to resign as chairman, and that the committee had agreed that he should be made an Honourary Life Member in recognition of his services to the club.
Wessex league
The A team has come top of its division and will be promoted. Keith reported that he is standing down as captain for next year.
Directing matters
Keith said that we have recently had several judgement rulings, one of which was referred to EBU for advice. He has started a “judgement rulings and psyches” book which will include details of the rulings for future reference if we get similar problems.
Items for the AGM
The AGM will be held on May 5th. Keith wants to start the AGM at 7.15 and hopes that it will finish by 7.45. Arthur will produce an agenda and a form for people to propose and second committee members. Gaye will make a short presentation on her plans for teaching. She would like the AGM to consider having an individual tournament one evening. Keith will present his note on the requirements for opening strong 2s.
Plans for teaching
Gaye has completed the EBU course for people wishing to teach bridge, and wants to hold classes in Wantage. We decided to hold a 12 week course in the Methodist Hall on Thursday afternoons, starting on 15th September, with the possibility of a second course starting in January. We suggested a fee of around £6/week, including a book costing £20, in line with EBU recommendations. We may also be able to play an “improvers session” alongside the normal session on Thursday evenings. Gaye needs some boards for the course. Lyn has some which she will offer to Gaye. Gaye will produce some posters which we can have displayed now to try to gauge interest in bridge courses.
