WANTAGE BRIDGE CLUB
Minutes of a committee meeting held in the Comrades Club on 12th June 2007
Present Alan Grunwald, Arthur Jones, Alan Parker, Lyn Morton, Keith Robbins,
Jonathan Robinson, Stan Powell, Avis Roberts, Peter Cecil
Apologies None
Matters arising from the previous AGM and Committee meeting on 24.3.07 None.
Chairman’s remarks
Alan Grunwald welcomed the new member of the committee Stan Powell. He then distributed copies of the EBU document, dated June 2007, which gave proposals for "the advancement of the game of Bridge in England". These proposals were far-reaching, especially in financial matters, and it was agreed that these should be discussed in detail at our next committee meeting.
Treasurer’s report
Lyn Morton reported that at present the club’s finances were in a satisfactory state with approximately £1800 in various savings accounts. 56 members, including most regular players, had paid their annual subscriptions so far.
Organisation of club nights
The setting-up of tables and their removal on club nights together with cards, bidding boxes etc was discussed, as was the scoring procedure. It was decided not to introduce rotas for these jobs at present but to stick with the informal approach. The Secretary would obtain further keys for the cupboard so that all members of the committee had one.
Bridgemates
A system for 10 tables would cost about £1300, a club member had offered to lend this amount to the club. It was decided to defer a decision on possible purchase for 6months.
Host system
The introduction of this system was discussed but it has had mixed success at other clubs. Our club members would be approached for their views and the matter would be discussed at the next committee meeting.
Teams
Keith Robbins would organise teams for this summer’s Ridgeway Cup. These would be of a mixed standard. In the Wessex League, Keith would continue to run the ‘A’ team using a pool of 9-10 players. Lyn Morton would again organise the ‘B’ team and it was hoped that a more settled squad would be available for her.
It was decided to find out if club members would be interested in a team of four competition to be played in people’s houses rather than in the club on Thursdays. A notice would be placed on the board and a start date of September 1st might be possible.
Avis Roberts would circulate a sheet outlining tactics for teams and pairs events.
Competitions
The club would take part in the Worldwide Sims to be held in June 2008 – the date to be notified later and this is unlikely to be a Thursday.
Club members will be contacted to find out if there is interest in running a Swiss Teams event on a Saturday or Sunday when there are no OBA events.
It appears that the idea of a bridge weekend at a hotel is not popular with many club members.
Any other business
Date of next meeting
This will be arranged later – probably when I come back from holiday!
Alan Parker (Hon. Secretary)
